FMP PART ONE

Formal Project Proposal

Section One – Rationale

In the early stages of the course I learned the basics of film making and what is required of a crew or an individual to create a successful piece of work. Most of the units I produced myself and this allowed me to find out whether I am better working in a team or independently. I have created and produced several videos myself over this year, some of the skills I have developed include; the importance of sound within film, the visual aspects, how to tell a narrative and even how to develop my own production company in the future should I wish to. Overall, I enjoyed the documentary unit the most, which is why I will be producing this for my final project. Reasons for this include; because I am enjoying interviewing, learning new things and this will also allow me to employ skills used in other units.

Section Two – Project Concept

My ambition for my video is to tell the audience about the savings and advantages of electric cars, the concept is to part the video up into different segments, this will allow me to mix between different segments while keeping them separate. The research I will need to produce will be mostly statistical because I believe that this is the best way to get information across in a short amount of time for example; the average distance from your home to an electric car charger is only ___ miles.

I would class the video I am aiming to produce as a documentary as it will document the different reasons to and to not purchase an electric vehicle and how accessible they are, and will contain many key elements of a documentary (interviews). It will be of the talking head/participatory style and will border between an advert and a commercial.

I plan to use a lot of equipment so that the production quality can be high. This will be a mix of my own equipment and colleges’. For the interviews section I will use two microphones (one clip on/lavalier and the other a shotgun) one as a backup and two cameras. Both on the interviewee with one on a motorized slider going back and forth. For the remainder of the video I will use a Canon 800D and also my phone on a handheld gimbal, I may also use suction mounts to mount cameras on the car. Mavic Mini (drone) for any aerial shots that are required, and when filming myself to use a lavalier microphone.

I would also like to look at the bigger picture, and how the impact of manufacturing electric vehicles affects us as people. This could mean interviewing more people at production sites and experts in the field. This would also give the viewer a clearer answer as to weather they should purchase an electric vehicle (EV) or not. I would also like to critique the car industry until the viewer makes a final decision.

Section Three – Evaluation

Evaluation is going to be a key part of this project as I want to make sure every aspect of the final video is perfect. Going along throughout the project I will do social media posts to a select group of people where I ask them for their feedback, and this will also happen at the very end. I will also screen the final film to a group to gain their feedback. Decision making will be written into my blog and a separate section will be created for key moments/decisions made throughout the FMP.

Section Four – Production Schedule/Action Plan

Updated: 07/04/21

Section Five – Research Sources/Bibliography

carwow (YouTube Channel)

This is an automotive focused YouTube channel which on average gains around 63 million views per month; the main purpose of their YouTube channel is to advertise their website carwow.co.uk where they give you “lower prices on new cars through their trusted dealers”. The main style of video that they provide is car reviews, where the host, Matt Watson walks around, in and out the vehicle showing the good and the bad features. He also goes in-depth into the specific features of the car which certain people may be interested in. The videos are quite lengthy at around ten to twenty minutes per video, I am not taking inspiration from the entirety of the carwow, the only section I am interested in is the ‘exterior design’ portion of the video which is linked to start at that section, which I think would be good to replicate but for it to be much shorter, as in the example video below the ‘exterior design’ segment is four minutes long and this would take up an overwhelming majority of my video.

Casey Neistat (YouTube Channel)

Casey is a YouTuber from New York who now produces and creates ‘vlogs’ which are videos that display the person’s life; however, I am not referencing his vlogs but the short films that he used to produce around ten years ago. My favorite of these being one called ‘bike lanes’ which is where he demonstrates how silly rules/laws can be, and where when breaking the rules is sometimes necessary. The reason this is going to inspire me is because of the engagement he manages to retain in such a short space of time. The video starts with Casey next to a police car to complain about other people the officer has not ticketed for parking in a bike lane, which is more dangerous than him not cycling in the bike lane, which he cannot do because of these obstacles. He makes very valid points and demonstrates this throughout the video, which is what I think keeps it engaging, the video now has around 28 million views and is still steadily rising to this day. I have linked the video below. This inspires me to make my video as engaging as possible so that the watch time is longer.

Daniel Kleinman (Commercial Director)

Daniel is a British director, who directed many music videos and car commercials for brands like Lexus and Nissan. He also like Casey gets his point across very well. He is also very well known for designing every title sequence for the James Bond films apart from Golden Eye, afterwards he returned to work on Skyfall and Spectre. He is also part of a group/company called ‘rattling stick’ which houses many directors in the UK and US. And the company has directed music videos for Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles and Billie Eilish (directed by Daniel), which is shown below. The thing I like about Daniels’s work is the creative side he always shows and that he is not scared to take a step away from normality as entices the viewer.

You (Netflix Original Series)

You is a Netflix series based on a book written and created by Caroline Kepnes; it “follows the story of Joe Goldberg, a bookstore manager in New York, who upon meeting Guinevere Beck, an aspiring writer, becomes infatuated with her. He feeds his toxic obsession using social media and other technology to track her presence and remove obstacles to their romance.” (Wikipedia, 2021). The reason this will inspire my production is for two reasons, the first being the production quality, now obviously I will not be able to get anywhere near to a Netflix ‘in-house’ production, but for the student and the scale of the project I want it to be as high as possible, as I think this will help me to produce the best video possible. The second reason is the way the story flows, as it never seems boring and it is very ‘binge-able’ by this I mean you can watch episode after episode and still be interested in the storyline. Below I have attached the trailer for season one of you which was released in 2018.

(KinoCheck International, 2018)

Safe (Netflix Original Series)

The reason safe is going to inspire the work I produce is for the same reasons as ‘You’ does. It is also a Netflix original and has many of the same qualities. You will find this with many other Netflix originals. Although in this case I am also inspired by the writer Harlan Coben, he has written a few books now which Netflix usually then go on to produce as a Netflix original series. As well as safe he and Netflix have also created another show called ‘The Stranger’ the both follow a very similar concept where from the start there is a very apparent good and bad side, and then a twist towards the end. I have linked the trailer for the series below so you can see what I mean.

(Netflix, 2018)

Louis Theroux (British Journalist)

Louis Theroux is British journalist and I have been looking into the way that he conducts these interviews, and what he personally thinks about them himself by looking at a written article so that I have a wide range of sources. The title of the article I am reading at the moment states that Louis Theroux is worried about not coming up to scratch (the article will be linked below). And I would say that this is also very true for myself. Another reason that I think Louis stands out from the crowd is that he is uniquely awkward in himself, which he also acknowledges in this article saying… “There’s no getting away from the fact that, even aged 50, I’m a slightly awkward person, a fearful person, worry-prone” (TheGuardian, 2021). This shows that as a character and a person in himself he really does care what others think of him and wants to keep a good reputation. And I think by him opening up and showing everyone how much he does care about what others think of him makes us respect him more, and this definitely comes across in the way that he interviews. Sometimes as a viewer we don’t interpret properly what is saying and instead of an interview seeming like a typical interview where the interviewer asks the interviewee a question and then moves onto the next, I would say that Louis doesn’t conform to this typical style and instead turns it into a sort of discussion around a topic. This is what I aim to do in all of my interviews, it also shows a form of dominance and confidence that sometimes the interviewee may not expect, which I can’t decide if it is a good thing or not. Another thing Louis does that I find impressive is described here: “…In some sense, I’m showing that the people are human beings. I’m saying that the people you might think of as ‘other’ can be quite relatable. But I don’t think I give them a platform uncritically.” (TheGuardian, 2021). Typically, in my opinion Louis interviews quirky or unordinary people and people who a generalized audience think is wrong like prostitutes for example. Although I don’t think Ill be interviewing as extreme people as Louis does it was definitely interesting to look at this written article to find out more about the way that he interviews.

Production Journal

(01/03/21): I started thinking about what I would like to produce as my FMP at the very beginning of march and initially I wanted to do some form of product advertisement. And the way I thought I could produce the best video is by first thinking very generally about what interests me in life and also what other videos or TV shows I watch most often because this is a good indication for what I actually like. And for me this was to do a video about cars as its something I am interested in. It is important for me to produce a video and develop a concept that I am interested in otherwise this could mean that I don’t make the video to the best of my ability. The unit I would say I struggled with the most throughout this year would be the introduction we had to produce for a crime drama idea we had, so this wouldn’t be something that I would be interested in doing again. But at the same time, I also wanted it to have a concept which a much wider audience would also be interested in rather than just a select group. So, for example like in the documentary I produced I intentionally made it about coronavirus as this is something that is affecting everyone right now and everybody can relate to the video. My initial idea was to produce a thirty second commercial for a car manufacture to promote their vehicles, an example of a video that I wanted to take inspiration from is below:

(Nil, 2019)

The reason I didn’t stick to this idea is because I don’t think that I could have produced it to a high enough standard that I would be happy with, but I still wanted to stay along the same concept of having vehicles involved because as previously described, it is something of high interest to me, I also wanted to produce a longer film rather than a thirty second video because it will help represent more aspects of filmmaking I have learned and what I can achieve.

(03/03/21): In my formal project proposal and ultimately the idea I have no settled on for the moment, I have included aspects and included more elements to create a project I can produce. I will be producing a short film in the style of a documentary. As previously discussed, I used coronavirus as an element that would make the film more relatable and more interesting to any viewer.

Now in this video I want to do the same thing but instead changing the aim to ‘renewable energy’, but to be specific the aim is this and NOT ‘climate change’. I have decided this because I believe that climate change is too much of a controversial subject which will affect peoples opinions on the film.

(The Guardian, 2019)

Not because of the filmmaking element but more so because of my opinions towards climate change, which could be agreed/disagreed on by anyone, this concept is too dependent on the viewers pre-formed opinions. I also mentioned before that I wanted to do something that involved cars, so combining these two ideas meant that I started thinking about doing a video on electric cars and how they could be the future of motoring. The main issue with this is that I am 16 and in my opinion to make the video interesting I would need an electric car as the ‘subject’ of the video, if I wasn’t able to get one it would be like filming a movie with no actors. And another key thing for me to do was to get this confirmed before I continued with this idea. I crafted a draft email that I sent to seven-teen different car manufactures and dealerships.

The main thing I realized when doing this is that you can knock on one hundred doors, but it’s the one with someone behind it that opens the door to make it possible really matters. I included my number in the emails and on Saturday 6th of March,

(AutoCar, 2021)

I received an email from ‘Westerly Barnstaple BMW’ agreeing that when coronavirus permits them to give out cars they will loan me one for a couple of days to film with. I included my mobile number in the emails and on Saturday 6th of March;

I received an email from ‘Westerly Barnstaple BMW’ agreeing that when coronavirus permits them to give out cars they will loan me one for a couple of days to film with.

The date he gave me was April 12th which fits me perfectly as this fall just after all the research will be completed and not any further afterwards. This obviously works if the current lockdown is eased in the planned way, which is why I have planned a backup plan to use family friends’ electric vehicles if this doesn’t permit.

(18/03/21): Today me and Harrison decided to conduct some primary research testing some wireless microphones what we may potentially use in our own FMP projects, I plan to use to use two completely separate microphone systems when filming important parts of my documentary such as the interviews, because there is nothing worse in my opinion than watching an interview with bad audio as that is what the main focus of the scene in the specific part of the video is.

(Imagecraftproductions, no date)

These microphones are available to be taken out from college to use in projects, the specific model that they are is the Sennheiser EW100 G2, they are wireless.

When we tested these, we turned on both the transmitter bodypack and the receiver, they automatically connect and pair with each other, the receiver needs to be plugged into a recording device such as the Zoom H4N as the receiver doesn’t record independently, we did run into a couple of issues when testing these microphones, the first being that both the batteries inside the transmitter and receiver were out of charge, this was fine because it was easy to go back upstairs to get them replaces, but this is a good thing to keep in mind when out on a shoot to take extra batteries incase they are dead or low. The second issue was that the Zoom H4N doesn’t have an XLR input, so we had to use the XLR to 3.5mm audio cable that was included in the pack, and then with this plugged into the left bottom slot of the H4N in a 3.5mm to 6.35mm adapter we were receiving an input into the recorder, now the only issue was that the recorder was only detecting audio in the left channel as that is the port it was plugged into, but in the settings of the Zoom you able to change to mono which means it duplicated the left channel to create a stereo sound. We set up a camera when doing this so there is some visual representation of how they work, you can view the video below to see how they sound.

The audio in the video sounds nice and clear and I would be very happy and satisfied to use this in my FMP project, they are also good at long distances which may be necessary if for example being taken on a tour around an electric car production plant where a cable would be very inconvenient.

(20/03/21): Today while looking for research sources I stumbled upon a video on YouTube by a user called Mill-I-e of a BMW i3 review that I thought was impressive and that I want to take inspiration from it, but there were also some parts I did not like. I have also written about this in the ‘Research Your Competition section. So far throughout this unit I have been looking at a YouTube channel called Carwow which is high profile and well known in the car world. But I would say it benefits be to look at both ends of the spectrum (to look at videos created by both big and small channels). With the presenter Millie being of such an early age it has inspired me that being young does not mean that you cannot create appropriate content, or that you can put less effort into it. Watching a smaller channel has helped me and more so inspired me to create amazing content even for a small audience.

I have also started looking at music and different songs that I might want to use within my documentary, music is a key part of any video whether you realize it or not, it helps give any video a general vibe, it can make a video seem happy or sad within seconds of the track starting, I want the documentary to seem innovative and futuristic, therefore when looking at music genres on YouTube’s audio library I selected the genre; Dance & Electronic, I have picked out a few songs that I think could fit and have listed them below, I am yet to decide which ones I will and won’t use, but I believe it is good to get these saved beforehand and pick at a later date after the project and my video has developed further.

Calvin Harris – josh pan
Just Dance – Patrick Patrikios
Koto San – Ofshane
Make You Move – Ofshane
Namaster Trip – Ofshane
One More Time – Ofshane

All songs above are © YouTube Audio Library

(23/03/21): This morning before our lesson I decided to try out the new DJI OSMO smartphone stabilizers that the college have purchased and are now available to be taken out by the students, the use case for this within my video would be to help me film the EV safely from the rear of another vehicle, the main feature that attracted me towards this device was the ability it has to ‘actively track’ a subject/object. So, the way I would use this is position the gimbal in the rear of the car, safely fasten it down and then position the active track so that it always keeps the EV in the center of the frame, the only issue with this is that… it will be always in the center of the frame and it will not seem as artistic although it is a much safer way of filming, a good compromise would be to use the OSMO on public roads where it is less safe and when I am able to film on private roads where it is safer and at lower speeds, to use a more specialized gimbal to get nicer shots with manual control, see the video below where, there are some example shots where we tested the gimbals useability below. I have also added this as a source in my bibliography.

(31/03/21): Today I decided to test out the DJI RSC2, this is a heavy-duty professional camera stabilizer that I will use in my FMP. The advantages to this are that it can handle DLSR cameras as opposed to the OSMO which can only take a mobile phone. I tested the OSMO last week and these are vastly different pieces of equipment while still performing the same purpose. I would say that I underestimated the weight of the gimbal and when assembled with the Canon 800D on-top it is much heavier than the OSMO, I would even go as far to say that I cannot operate it with one hand. Taking this into consideration when placing it in the rear of the boot I will put it on the included tripod, or another tripod where the legs are more spread apart, this means it will have a larger footprint and be less likely to fall over. It also has a good feature where it can use the sensors within your mobile phone and replicate the movements, this is good for me because it means I can operate the gimbal remotely from the rear seats of the filming vehicle safely. I also have uploaded some test shots to YouTube using this device which you can view below.

(01/04/21): By the end of Deans lesson today I wish to progress with part three (the pitch), I am currently working on the Key Conclusions section, I am already most of the way through this so this shouldn’t take long. Then after this is complete, I will go back to the Inspiration section and then finish off The Pitch section.

(20/04/21): This week I wrote the script and the question list for my documentary. I wrote a question list that I can use towards the different interviewees. And the script is for the BMW i3 review portion of the video. You can view both these documents in part four on my website. I also got into contact with car journalist Rory Reid who is also an ex-host at BBC’s Top Gear and asked him for his opinions, this has now been uploaded to YouTube which you can view at the link below. Now that this has been completed, I have started to record test shots so that I can see what my documentary may look like and also what equipment will and wont work when recording. I will update below when I have completed my first part of the test shots.

(22/04/21): Today I will change my FMP to include a psychographic audience, this will mean that the audience will be more suited to specific categories of people who perform specific actions. This will impact my FMP and mean that I can target it towards a group of people that may be more interested than others.

(27/04/21): Today I rang my contact at BMW, to organise when the i3 can be collected to film the production. Looking back at my production schedule this shows the different dates it had to be filmed with. To be accommodating as a TV producer I first of all asked BMW which dates within this period they would like me to have the car, as they may have it booked out by someone else during this time. Richard (BMW) told me that no one else had the car booked and suggested that I take it out on the Monday and Tuesday during this period (10th & 11th of May). I also checked what time the car will be available for collection and I was told any time after the 8:30 in the morning which suits me perfectly. Monday is also a great day to collect the car as my friend who I hope to film the Review section with has Mondays away from college. On the 11th I will definitely film the car review section and parts of the cinematic section, this will likely continue onto the Tuesday. Please see the email below which confirms these dates!

(29/04/21): Today we have completed test shots using the light reflectors, these are an option instead of using full lights. They work by using the natural light from the sun or another light source and then bouncing it at another object, this works best on small objects. Like people, but these wouldn’t work filming a building outside for example as it is too large and would be disproportionate. You can view these test shots here: Light Reflector Test – Bradley Smart (bradleyjsmart.co.uk).

By the end of today I hope to have completed all of Part Four (Plan it), I have currently completed all aspects of it with the exception of the covid related problems, which I expect I will be able to complete by the end of today. Then I will start creating content and editing content in preparation for my final video.

(04/05/21): I have decided to do some more work and practicing my skills in colour grading/correction today. This means that it will give your video a much better look and can also make it achieve a certain style. For example, a tropical video may have more of a bluey colour compared to another video. For me this depends on the weather on the day of filming. I have practiced adapting the colours on the test shots that I completed, I haven’t done this to make the video feel a certain way at this point. But more so to make the video seem more realistic and bring back the colours that are visible to the human eye. Below is a side by side comparison with before colour correction on the left and after on the right. Please note the right side has also been stabilised, this means that the bumps in the road are a lot less visible. This is also the reason as to why it is cropped in.

(09/05/21): I am now on the final day before I am due to film the main parts for my FMP. I have rigged the camera on the gimbal in the rear of the camera car and also collected the BMW i3 from BMW. This will be used to film with tomorrow, also on Monday evening I will be filming the car review section of the video, I then plan to transfer all the footage and to edit the majority of it with some minor touches to change on the Tuesday.

Throughout the time I have spent working on this section I have also added to the: research bibliography, production journal and production costs.
