OTS – CAMERA BASICS

Day and Night shot.

What difference does shooting at a high ISO make to the quality of the photograph?

Raising your ISO will give you the ability to capture a higher quality photograph in many situations because it gives you the ability to use a faster shutter speed and smaller aperture (a larger aperture number) to get a sharper scene.

What is Aperture? Please describe.

The aperture controls how much of the scene is in focus in front of and behind the area that you’ve focussed on.

What is the difference between f22 and f1.4?

When we refer to a “small” aperture, the relevant f-stop will be a bigger number. Therefore, f22 is a small aperture, whereas f1. 4 is a large aperture.

What is shutter speed?

In photography, shutter speed or exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph.

What effect will a long shutter speed have on motion within the frame?

When you use a long shutter speed, you end up exposing your sensor for a significant period of time. The first big effect of it is motion blur. If your shutter speed is long, moving subjects in your photo will appear blurred along the direction of motion.

What is the difference between a photograph taken with a lens with a focal length of 24mm and one with a focal length of 250mm

24mm will be a much wider shot with a larger depth of field and 250mm will be a very zoomed in photo with a smaller depth of field.

What does the term crop factor refer to in a camera and how does it apply to focal length?

Crop factor, format factor, or focal length multiplier of an image sensor format is the ratio of the dimensions of a camera’s imaging area compared to a reference format; most often, this term is applied to digital cameras, relative to 35 mm film format as a reference.
